The owners of Caesar's Casino in Johannesburg first realised they were being scammed after noticing that blackjack takings were down by an unprecedented 11% over the course of three weeks. Casino security personnel began observing the blackjack players carefully, finding nothing that was conclusive. Puzzled as to the cause, investigators soon realised that the casino's cards were the source of the problem. The backs of the 10, jack, queen and king were different from the others in each deck, subtle enough that nobody would notice unless they were specifically looking for it. It turned out that Caesar's Casino had received a delivery of 4,000 specially marked packs of cards, but it was never found out who was behind the profitable scam.
