10 Infamously Chilling Deaths And Disappearences

2. Dorothy Forstein

Mysterious Stranger Fog
The Milwaukee Journal/Google News

Dorothy Forstein was the mother of three children and the happily married wife of a Milwaukee city magistrate. In 1944, she was returning to an empty home late at night. She entered through the front door and was immediately assaulted by an unknown assailant who beat her unconscious, then fled the scene.

The police could not identify any suspects or motive. Mr. Forstein, who had an airtight alibi, did not believe a political enemy was responsible. No one could understand why someone would lie in wait, beat a woman unconscious, then flee the scene empty-handed.

Five years later, home one night with her younger two children, Mrs. Forstein disappeared. Her husband arrived home at 11:30 PM to find the children cowering in their bedroom. Nine-year-old Marcy Forstein, told police she was awakened by a strange man entering the house. She saw the man pick up her unconscious mother from the floor. She alleged that the man patted her head and said, “Go back to sleep, little one, your mother is alright.” The stranger then walked out the front door, carrying Dorothy over his shoulder.

Again, nothing was stolen from the house and there was no sign of forced entry. And again, there were no suspects or apparent motive. Detectives could not figure out why Marcy had seen her mother already unconscious on the floor in her nightgown.
