3. Collie Entragian (Desperation)

We’ve all been there: road-tripping across the Nevadan desert when you’re pulled over by a demon wearing a police officer as a suit who then proceeds to frame you for possessing weed and then kidnaps you and takes you back to the isolated town he’s taken over. Bloody typical, eh? Now, technically, the real villain here is the demon Tak, but to me, he makes his most memorable appearance in the form of Sheriff Collie Entragian. And it’s my list so shut up.

Entragian isn't above murdering children as well as adults and uses his command of the creatures of the desert to terrorise those who stand against him. Fortunately, the demon Tak wears out the human bodies he takes possession of, forcing him to find other hosts. Unfortunately, he does exactly that. But Tak's initial impression as the towering, muscular sheriff is what stays with the reader the most.

When we're young, we're told that the policeman is our friend. Society teaches us to respect authority figures, and even to trust them with our lives if necessary. We carry this faith with us as we age, and that is the undoing of the hapless protagonists taken to the titular town.

It's hard enough to realise and accept upon leaving childhood that the world is full of fallible adults; it's even worse when those adults also murder an entire town's residents.
