10 Mind-Blowing Pieces Of Evidence That Proves Lost City Of Atlantis Was Real

7. The Palace Of Knossos

One building that receives special attention by Plato is the temple of Poseidon, which he says was in the middle of the island. Some researchers interpret this to be a different island to the one where the metropolis was located, because he also mentions a very large, rectangular plain in this context, which would not have fit on the ‘metropolis island’. In any case, the temple of Poseidon was a grand structure but supposedly had a ‘barbaric appearance’. It was also dedicated to Poseidon (obviously), along with his lover, Cleito.

Near the middle (lengthways, at least) of the rectangular island of Crete was a large and important palace. It is known as the Palace of Knossos. Its appearance would probably have seemed barbaric to the Greeks, since it was very complicated and inelegant compared to ancient Greek buildings. In fact, this Palace of Knossos is thought to be the origin of the famous labyrinth in Greek myth, showing what the Greeks thought of its design.

It also served as a temple, not just a palace. And very importantly, it was actually dedicated to Poseidon (or ‘Poteidan’, as he was known to the Minoans) and an unnamed goddess. Poseidon was actually the chief god of the Minoans, just like he was said to have been the chief god of Atlantis. Therefore, the Palace of Knossos bears an unmistakable resemblance to the temple of Poseidon.
