How brave are those US Marines to hoist high the first sighting of 'Old Glory' on the war-torn lands of Japanese island Iwo Jima in 1945? Look at them, taking one for the team and enlisting the help of a Navy buddy to help them make Uncle Sam proud. Not so fast, because it's widely believed that this was a staged moment.

The soldiers did put the flag up, but they weren't the first ones to do so that day. Back home in the States however, people felt inspired by the powerful image and it became a symbol of hope that the evil Japanese forces would soon be crushed in the name of liberty. Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal was declared a hero for capturing such a moment.

Rosenthal wasn't even the only one out there taking pics. His photograph was simply decreed the best of the lot and the public were told it was a first.
