Spare a thought for Welsh medium Colin Evans. He was vilified for tricking people into believing he could levitate back in the 1930's, but the general public are blissfully happy to go along with claims that Celebrity Big Brother is 'reality television' today. Some people get all the luck.

Seriously though, Evans did try to use the fear of the unknown to make money. Claiming that spirits lifted him from his seat, the man leapt into the air and stunned onlookers. It was later discovered that he used a cord and triggered photographs of these "levitations" himself. People were outraged, even though they probably should have smelled something fishy when Colin said he needed to perform under the shroud of darkness.

During one séance held at North Gate Mansions, Regent's Park in 1938, Evans was forced to return money to unhappy customers who figured out his trick and noted his blurred feet from jumping in the resultant photographs. What a rogue.
