10 Most Bizarre People Who Claimed To Be Jesus Reincarnate
3. Ann Lee
The oldest entry on the list, Mother Ann Lee led the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing (or the Shakers) during the 18th Century. Lee preached that it was possible to gain perfect holiness if sexual relations were abstained from, possibly resulting from the fact she had four children from a practically-forced marriage and lost them all during infancy. Mother Lee, as her followers referred to her, preached publicly in England that the second coming was imminent and declared that she had received visions from God - leading to her being imprisoned on a regular basis for blasphemy. After being released from prison, Lee - who believed ecstatic dancing or "shaking" allowed the Holy Spirit to purify souls - was said to have performed many "miracles", including healing the sick. Emigrating from England to New York in 1774, Lee led a group of her followers to the USA in order to attempt to spread her own religion. She died in 1784, but the Shakers continued to preach their religion well into the 1990s.
