The Brazilian wandering spider can be found in, well, Brazil. Also known as an armoured spider, it belongs to the genus Phoneutria which is Greek for ‘Murderess’.

This spider doesn’t spin webs but actively stalks prey on the ground of the forest. The little creature’s defence mechanism is a thing of pure terror and nightmare fuel, as the spider has a layered exoskeleton which creates a reinforced body - hence the nickname.

In contrast to most on this list, the spider uses its venomous bite to hunt and not as a defence mechanism. The spider’s venom consists of a mixture of proteins and toxins which attacks the prey’s neuromuscular system, causing asphyxiation and paralysis. This Brazilian wandering spider is the most venomous spider in the world.

On an interesting and somewhat bizarre side note, a toxic bite by one of these arthropods has been known to leave men with long lasting and painful erections - maybe they should name it ‘the Viagra spider’.
