Beware of the beauty of the tiny but deadly blue-ringed octopus. Residing in tide pools and coral reefs across Indo-Pacific oceans, this minute creature is no more than five inches in diameter but contains a lethal poison called tetrodotoxin. It carries enough of the toxin to kill over 20 fully-grown humans - yes, the same toxin as the pufferfish.

It is dangerous to simply come into contact with this little beauty as the venomous toxins are secreted all over its body, therefore not needing to bite or sting - unsuspecting prey is usually unaware of its envenomation until it is too late. This dastardly feature is used for protection rather than to aid in hunting.

Like with many others on the list, the almost hypnotising skin display is to ward off potential predators with the ringed pattern appearing when the little squishy creature is agitated or in distress.

The scariest part of the blue-ringed octopus’ venom is that there is no known cure to its tetrodotoxin. Anyone or anything that comes into contact with this cephalopod has a minimal chance of surviving.
