Another Indo-Pacific native, the Chironex Fleckeri, commonly known as the sea wasp is a species of box jellyfish that produces an extremely potent toxin. As the name suggests, it uses a stinging mechanism to defend itself against predators.

The jellyfish’s tentacles are covered in cnidocytes which are very small puncturing barbs which deliver a deadly toxin. Once the skin is punctured, the toxin causes cells to leak potassium leading to hyperkalemia, which can lead to complete cardiovascular collapse within as little as five minutes.

An attack can also lead to an increased heart rate which can cause a sudden heart attack at the point of sting, leaving you locked in a watery-grave.

The larger the jellyfish, the more barbs they carry, which means there is a higher chance of getting stung if getting tangled up with one of these dangerous creatures.
