10 Most Embarrassing Presidential Nicknames In History

3. "Ten-Cent Jimmy" And "The Do-Nothing President" - James Buchanan

James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States and he was in the White House for just one term between 1857 and 1861 - with many critics believing he did little-to-nothing during that time. As such, Buchanan was labelled "The Do-Nothing President" by his political opponents, primarily because, even though he thought the Southern states' secession was illegal, he did not believe war was the means to prevent it. A lawyer, Buchanan explained: "I acknowledge no master but the law." In addition, another statement also gained Buchanan the unwanted nickname of "Ten-Cent Jimmy". During his campaign Buchanan stated that "ten cents a day was decent pay for a worker", and this was able to be used against him by his opponents in working-class districts to show he was out of touch with the common man.
