Yoo Young-Chul was hardly a model citizen before his eventual arrest for the murder of as many as 21 people, many of whom he cannibalised. Before he embarked on his career as a serial killer he had already spent time in and out of jail for an assortment of crimes ranging from theft through to the rape of a child.

It was following the jail sentence for that rape that he started his killings, murdering his first victim a mere thirteen days following his release. From September of 2003 through to July of 2004 he went on a rampage, murdering 21 people by his own admission and eating the livers of some of his victims as well.

Yoo  - whose crimes inspired the movie The Chaser - targeted the rich and - following his being dumped by an escort girl who had become his girlfriend when she found out about his rap sheet - prostitutes.

His arrest sparked enormous debate about capital punishment in South Korea and he was eventually sentenced to death for his crimes. As for his motives, it seems that cannibalism was not high on the agenda as in his own words:

"Women shouldn't be sluts, and the rich should know what they've done."
