Dorangel Vargas was a homeless man who preyed on the visitors of a park near the Venezuelan city of San Cristóbal, eventually admitting to the killing of ten men, all of whom he cannibalised.

In fact, his reputation was such that he earned himself the nickname of the 'Hannibal Lecter of the Andes', though others gave him the more simple - yet no less effective - moniker of 'El comegente' (people eater).

Vargas stands out from the other killers on this list due to the short period of time in which he killed his victims - with all ten murders occurring between November 1998 and January 1999 - in addition to the fact that he literally hunted the people that he killed using a tube-shaped spear and rocks.

He made a point not to kill women and children and would generally have to gorge on the flesh of his latest kill to ensure he ate as much as possible, as he had no means of storing it for later consumption.

He was arrested in February 1999 when a number of bodies were found in the park and Vargas came under suspicion. Investigators traced him to a ranch house he was living in, where they found human flesh prepared for consumption.
