6. Die Mauer Ist Weg! Berlin Ist Wieder Berlin! BZ
Berlin symbolised the Cold War in Europe it was a city divided between West and East, between capitalism and socialism, and supposedly between freedom and oppression via Die Mauer (The Wall). Yet the breaching of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, and its subsequent demolition eventually led to the reunification of Germany and the fall of communism in Europe. Such an historic event dominated the news cycle in Germany and across the globe but the front page that most sticks in the memory is BZs the day after the Wall fell. Die Mauer ist Weg! Berlin ist wieder Berlin! (The wall is gone! Berlin is Berlin again!) it read. This headline summarised the feeling of jubilation around Germany that a once divided nation was now on its way back to being unified. It is an eye-catching front page simply due to the size and quantity of the font, but its effect is quite staggering.
