7. PEACE! JAPAN CAPITULATES The York Daily News Times
The biggest typeface available to the editor of The York Daily News Times was utilised on August 15, 1945, to declare Japans surrender and the subsequent end of World War II. Adolf Hitler and the German Third Reich had fallen four months previously but Japan had promised to fight on to the death and the world risked being subjected to the continuation of the war for years to come. However, the creation of the atomic bomb through The Manhattan Project and the subsequent devastation of Hiroshima via an explosive codenamed Little Boy and Nagasaki by Fat Man forced the Japanese to surrender in mid-August 1945. PEACE! JAPAN CAPITULATES summed up perfectly the relief around the globe that the Second World War had finally come to an end. The world could now begin to recover following six years of brutal warfare peace had finally arrived.
