9. Would Your Teenage Daughter Meet Up With A Stranger They Met Online?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tMb5rnSVMo Now we move from young children to teenagers and a problem that has been fairly prominent in society for almost as long as the internet has been around. In this video YouTuber Coby Persin poses as a 15 year old boy on Facebook and (again with the parents permission), tries to convince three young girls, aged 14, 13 and 12, to meet up with him using this fake persona essentially a reverse on the TV show To Catch a Predator. In all 3 instances, again much to the shock of the parents, Coby was able to convince the girls to come and meet up with him. The third instance in the video is perhaps the most stunning, when Coby turns up alone in person, posing as the brother of his fictional 15 year old persona and still manages to convince the girl to get into his van with him. What the experiment does well As with the previous video it highlights how parents overestimating their childrens ability to appropriately deal with situations like these (something that pretty much all parents do) can lead to them not educating their child about the issue properly. It also highlights the ease with which a predator can use the internet to convince a teenage child they are someone else and ultimately lure them into situations where they are at risk, stressing the importance of properly educating children on how to safely use social media. Possible Flaws Admittedly there may be some flaws that Im missing, but to be honest this one seemed pretty well done, and its easy to see how a child predator might have used similar methods to those used by Coby in the video. Additional Note Whilst you might feel bad for doing it, especially given the nature of the experiment, it is incredibly hard not to laugh at the parents reactions, particularly the last couple who put on ski masks and poses as kidnappers when their daughter gets into Cobys van.
