10 Obscure Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novels That You Need To Read
8. Only Forward – Michael Marshall Smith
The concept of Only Forward is a difficult one to
describe, being that there is very little to grasp until you get to the last 15
pages of the book where a wave of understanding comes crashing down on you and
you're left to pick up the tiny little pieces that your brain has inevitably been
left in, but I will do my damned best.
Taking the comedic beats from the likes of Monty Python and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and blending them perfectly with a mind bending Inception-like dreamscape all set under the umbrella of a future based/alternate reality detective noir might seem like a few too many things to pack into 300 pages. Yet what Smith achieves here is a completely digestible plot that weaves together a cast of memorable characters and concepts that will leave you reeling when the cyclical nature of the final twist becomes apparent.
Smith manages to portray through protagonist Stark a painfully relatable and yet far from even remotely grounded character who is doing his best to stay afloat in a city he remembers less and less of each day.
