10 Old Wives' Tales You Shouldn't Believe

10. The Five-Second Rule

This myth is probably the oldest in the book. You drop food onto the floor, you shout €œFive second rule!€ then you pick it up and eat it. Don€™t deny it €“ you€™ve probably done it at least once in your life. How accurate is the €œFive-second rule€, though? Some people genuinely believe that if you pick up your crisp/sandwich/corndog in time, it won€™t be contaminated. They couldn€™t be more wrong. You might think that your food is safe to eat, but your food might have landed on some really nasty bacteria. Not so bad, you say? It could be. Imagine contracting salmonella or hepatitis from a chip you just couldn€™t leave lying on the ground. Now ask yourself, is it really worth the risk?
