It used to be believed that you had a certain amount of brain cells and once a brain cell dies, its pretty much gone forever. Not so. Back in 1998, scientists at the Sweden and the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California discovered that brain cells in adults are actually able to redevelop in a process called neurogenesis. Terminal cancer patients were used to undergo a procedure that labelled dividing cells and once the patients passed away, post-mortem exams were done on them. Researchers discovered that there was evidence of new brain cell growth. The discovery has since given hope to those who have neurological disorders such as Alzheimers, diseases such as Parkinsons, and of course to those who have suffered trauma to the head.
