10 Outrageous Ways Women Have Suffered To Be Beautiful
5. Lead Makeup
Everyone from the Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans all fell victim to the wrath of lead makeup at some stage, but it wasn't until the Elizabethan era that it was banned from being used.
In the 1500's lead makeup was used to whiten the skin, because it was considered the most beautiful of the time. Unfortunately for the wearers, lead was so poisonous when used as makeup that it would cause excessive weight loss, hair loss, paralysis, organ damage and other serious illnesses. Some infants even died because of their mothers usage of the toxic makeup.
But you can never stop a woman from wearing her foundation - it was later reinvented without the use of lead.
