10 Outrageous Ways Women Have Suffered To Be Beautiful
3. Foot Binding
The practice of foot-binding (also known as "lotus feet"), was the norm in China in the 10th and 11th century and was the act of wrapping a three - to five-year old girl's feet with binding so as to bend the toes under, break the bones and force the back of the foot together.
Small feet were to the Chinese like the small waist was to Victorian England. The smaller women's feet were, the more attractive they were. This became a horrible problem as bound feet meant that many women were left crippled and men seized the opportunity to beat and abuse them and use this as a tool to dominate the women in their lives.
Binding feet has since stopped, but there are still some elderly women in China who have deformed feet because of this horrible fad.
