10 People Who Survived Gruesome Accidents Against All The Odds
9. Skydiver Freefall
In 2009, a cameraman called Paul Lewis was filming tandem skydivers above an airfield in Shropshire. Then, after leaping from an altitude of around 10,000 feet, everybody's worst nightmare struck: His parachute failed.
As he plummeted to the ground he began to spiral out of control. Lewis reports that at about 2,000 feet he blacked out - and he's thankful for it.
Incredibly, after hurtling out of the sky at over 100mph, Lewis didn't break a single bone in his body. By sheer dumb luck he had fallen onto the roof of the hangar on the airfield, cushioning his fall to the extent that the worst he suffered was a neck injury and some nerve damage to one of his arms.
In another incredible story, a skydiver named Brad in Australia was enjoying a tandem jump that had been bought for him for his birthday, when he heard his instructor swearing. His parachute had torn and the backup chute became tangled in the twisted remains.
His mum, dad, three sisters and their families all watched on in horror as the pair fell, but were relieved when they finally came down into a lake on a nearby golf course. Both Brad and his instructor survived and Brad has since gotten a tattoo of a (thankfully opened) parachute on his forearm to remind him of his lucky escape.
