10 People Who Survived Gruesome Accidents Against All The Odds
8. Shot By An Arrow
An 11-year-old Chinese schoolboy had a seriously lucky escape when a classmate of his shot him through the eye with a bow and arrow.
In December 2008 Liu Cheong was rushed to hospital with a 16-inch arrow sticking out of his eye socket. Doctors even had to trim part of the arrow down to fit the boy into the CT scanner in order to assess the damage.
The scans revealed that the arrow had penetrated straight through his head, only stopping when it hit the back of the skull. Had it been travelling any faster, then it would have burst straight through and could have caused significantly more damage due to the arrow's fletching.
The scans also revealed that, somehow, despite entering through the eye socket, the arrow had completely missed both Liu Cheong's optic nerve and brain. His survival was described as a "miracle".
Incidentally, the girl who shot him was also taken into hospital and treated for shock. Having seen the pictures (gore warning), we're not exactly surprised.
