A 23-year-old woman from Arizona defied all the odds when she was involved in a horrific car crash.

Rachel Bailey was rushed to hospital after the incident, where doctors discovered that she had been (gulp) internally decapitated. This means that her spine had been wrenched away from her skull without breaking the skin, leaving her head attached to her body by just skin and sinew.

Generally speaking, you'll be unsurprised to learn, this conditions usually results in immediate death or lifelong paralysis. But, somehow, Rachel survived the ordeal with her spinal cord intact and the task of putting her back together again began in earnest.

Doctors used an arsenal of metal plates, pins and screws to fix her head firmly back onto her neck and thus ensuring that she'll never be able to pass through airport security in peace again.

The accident has erased around five week's of Bailey's memory, but after weeks of intensive care and physio, she has incredibly managed to regain her speech and motor function.
