10 Problems Only Graphic And Web Designers Will Understand

6. Explaining The Concept Of €œWebsites That Suck€

Most people don€™t really think about it, but one of the easiest web sites in the world to use is Amazon. When you look at a page there, you know where you are. You know how to do a search for what you want, you're presented with the most likely choice at the top of the search page, you get references to other things you might like, and you get reviews on products from other customers. And once you€™ve made that initial purchase, you can go back and find checkout a breeze. This is what web designers strive for when they are creating a site: ease of use. This task gets harder when there are other materials to match it to, such as business cards, letterheads, logos, printed brochures and company reports. Add in a print designer from the other side of the workshop who hasn€™t a clue about how to build a site, and who thinks you should be able to match his designs exactly, even down to his esoteric fonts and wince-inducing colors, and your headaches become migraines. Even worse is the client who built his site on one of those €œstorefront€ sites such as WIX, or VersaPrint. It€™s not that those companies are bad, or that what they offer doesn€™t work. It€™s explaining to the customer that you can€™t offer them the same type of service because you don€™t have an army of programmers working for you.
