10 Problems Only People From Crook Will Understand

6. Bye Bye Glenholme

There is a national obesity epidemic; this is hardly new information. It is hard to ignore the facts when much of the TV schedule is swamped with shows that are aimed at showing us how to cook, eat, and essentially live healthily. Despite all of that, the Glenholme Leisure Centre still closed and was demolished in 2011, which left the inhabitants of Crook with little to no leisure facilities to speak of. Perhaps our particular obesity level, and general health and wellbeing were too far gone to save? The County Council justified the decision by arguing that such closures were a necessity of the cuts forced on local authorities, by a heartless central government. At time of writing their have been plans submitted to build a new leisure centre and expand on the facilities already in place at Peases West running track. Like the constantly 'proposed' and mythical new football ground, or the circulating rumours that Aldi are eyeing up the land behind the old library, until we at least see the foundations being dug out, no-one will be counting their chickens just yet.
