10 Problems Only People From Crook Will Understand
7. Well, Ain't This Place A Geographical Oddity?
Now, as 'pretty' and historically beautiful Durham City is, if we're being honest it doesn't boast a whole host of amenities. Aside from the Cathedral and intimate river walks, it sometimes falls a bit short on the 'excitement' factor. There's no major sporting teams, no cinema (barring the Gala, which I am refusing to count on the basis that it is essentially one screen, with 1 additional oversized TV in a function room), no music venues, no decent clubs, and a general grubbiness in some parts - (we're looking at you North Road!) What this means is that we people of Crook need to look further afield when proposing a day out, or for anything else really other than grabbing a few in Spoons before heading to The Kings. What makes this difficult is that every major city is just that little bit too far away to make a leisurely trip remotely convenient. Newcastle - 23miles, Sunderland - 22 miles, Middlesbrough - 29 miles; pretty much equidistant to all destinations. And the availability of buses to these far off places are slim. Durham, Darlington, and Stanhope are as far as you're going to get without changing, and even then for the first two you're looking at nearly a tenner return.
