10 Psychological Novels Guaranted To Mess With Your Mind
9. A Million Little Pieces By James Frey
This novel was originally sold as a memoir and later marketed as a semi-fictional novel following accusations of literary forgery. It tells the story of a 23-year-old alcoholic and drug abuser and how he copes with rehabilitation in a twelve steps-oriented treatment center. While initially promoted as a memoir, it was later discovered that many of the events described in the book never happened - but that doesn't make this book any less likely to have a severe affect upon it's reader. From the descriptions of the state of the narrator in the beginning, to the various treatments he goes through while in the center, A Million Little Pieces is guaranteed to have you gagging on one page and almost crying with sympathy at the next. Perhaps the most unforgettable part is when James has to undergo a root canal operation without any pain relief. The reader is left as agonized by the graphic descriptions of the experience as James is by the real life thing. It's a must read if you enjoy, or are at least fascinated by, the realms of pain which a human being can go through in order to restore order to a life almost destroyed. (It's also a great read into the mindset of a drug addict, and is refreshingly honest, guaranteed to put you off a dally into drug addiction if you were considering it).
I love Stephen King and music festivals; I eat my toast upside down; I daydream about getting married probably a bit too much; and I wish every day for a pet sausage dog puppy (who never materialises – sob).
