Mel Blanc's face may not be recognizable to most people, but his voice is one of the best known on the planet. From Bugs Bunny to Yosemite Sam, Blanc brought animation to life, earning the nickname "The Man of A Thousand Voices."
He first began his career in radio before playing a pivotal role in the golden age of American animation. Working for Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies and Warner Bros. cartoons, he provided the voice for characters such as Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester the Cat, Pepe Le Pew, Tweety Bird, and Foghorn Leghorn. He also later provided the voice for Barney Rubble of the Flintstones.
Although he lived to a ripe age of 81, Blanc suffered a life-threatening car accident in 1962 after colliding head on with another vehicle on Sunset Blvd. A skull fracture left him in a coma along with fractures to both legs and his pelvis. After two weeks, one of Blanc's neurologists asked him, "How are you feeling today, Bugs Bunny?" Blanc suddenly awakened and managed to answer weakly, "Eh... just fine, Doc. How are you?"
