Although her life wasn't always full of bluebirds and rainbows, Judy Garland left behind an amazing legacy marked by her exceptional talent and troubled personal life. The actress and singer starred in many beloved musicals, but is best known for her portrayal of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.

Born Frances Ethel Gumm on 10 June 1922, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, she was the the daughter of vaudeville performers and began her stage career at a young age. After changing her name to Judy Garland and moving to California with her family, she eventually signed a contract with MGM at the age of 13. And in 1939, she scored the role of a lifetime and those famous ruby red slippers.

She would appear in a string of other successful MGM musicals but also suffer from pressure by the studio relating to her appearance. Garland was provided amphetamines to boost her energy and control her weight, resulting in addictions that would plague her the rest of her career.

Along the way she was married five times, had three children (including Liza Minnelli), and died on 22 June 1969 of an accidental overdose at the age of 47.

*A memorial to Dorothy's beloved dog Toto is located near Garland's gravesite -- but the actual dog, "Terry," was buried on her owner’s ranch.
