The Sahara desert has not always been the dry and arid place that it is now. According to a recent study, it used to be submerged under 164 feet (50 km) of seawater, which covered 1158 sq miles (3000 sq km) of what are now sandy dunes. The sediment that has been left behind is littered with prehistoric fossils, which have allowed scientists to date the region and study its biodiversity.

The Sahara used to be home to catfish and sea snakes. Since the sea used to move in and out of the region, it is possible that the area developed pockets of water, in which life thrived, isolated from marine life in the surrounding area. This could have led to a phenomenon known as gigantism, which refers to animals developing large bodies on isolated islands, possibly as a result of abundant food, scarce predators, or both. Could this explain some of the Greek myths that contain giant sea monsters?
