In Plato’s description of Atlantis, he says that the stones quarried in the region were primarily red, white and black. He goes on to say that the main city was constructed from rocks of the same color.

In the documentary Visiting Atlantis, George S. Alexander points out the abundance of black and red rocks, with some white rocks present too. These rocks are scattered loosely throughout the region.

Plato also described the area around the Richat as having an abundance of metals, specifically gold and copper. Mauritania’s largest export today is iron, followed by fish, oil, gold, and copper.
