10 Scariest Castles In The World

9. Edinburgh Castle €“ Scotland

Edinburgh Castle From its position on Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle consumes the skyline of Edinburgh. Humans have populated the area since the Iron Age and a castle has existed on the site since the 12th century under the reign of David I. The castle has played a significant role in Scottish history during the Scottish Wars of Independence and the Jacobite Rising. Destruction and reconstruction plagued the castle, until it was primarily used as holding for prisoners of war, and then a national landmark. Reportedly, multiple ghosts haunt the castle. One of them is a headless drummer who walks along the battlements and disappears when spotted. Ghostly phantoms have been seen and heard in the dungeons, especially that of Janet Douglas, Lady Glamis, who was tortured and burned at the stake as a witch in 1537. Another poor soul stuck in the castle is that of a piper who was sent into the tunnels beneath the castle never to be seen again. Even to this day, the piper€™s painful melody can be heard throughout the fortification.
