6. Carrie - Stephen King
Up next is another Stephen King novel that will leave you forever thankful that you don't have to attend prom again, unless you haven't yet, in which case you should perhaps wait to read Carrie. Carrie White has been bullied for as long as she can remember and living at home with her God-fearing mother isn't doing her any favours either so when she realises that she possesses telekinetic powers she decides to seek revenge on those who have caused her pain. The first part of the novel is a build up to the biggest night in Carrie's life, prom night, a night where every girl should feel like a princess, and for a short while Carrie does. But one of her peers has also hatched a plan to humiliate Carrie in front of the whole school, a decision she will most definitely live to regret, making prom night the worst disaster that Carrie's hometown of Chamberlain has ever seen. What makes King's novel even scarier is that it is not totally unheard of for social outcasts to perform such horrific acts in real life resulting in many student deaths. Carrie is a terrifying account of the consequences of bullying with a supernatural twist which will leave you sleeping with the light on for a good while.
