10. Toilet Water Spins In Opposite Directions On Either Side Of The Equator
Its true that hurricanes spin anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the south, thanks to a phenomenon known as The Coriolis effect - a directional force caused by the rotation of the Earth. However, the Earth takes an entire day to turn just once. This renders the Coriolis effect from the Earth pretty small, and leaves it only affecting things that occur over large distances or timeframes. Hurricanes are, of course, bigger than toilets - the effect of the earth rotating on a bowl of water is generally not enough. Perhaps you dont believe us, because youve asked your friend on the opposite side of the equator which way their toilet water flushes (who wouldnt?!) and youve deduced youre spinning in opposite directions. However, its more important what direction the water is poured into the toilet bowel than it is what hemisphere you are in. The spin therefore has more to do with the way the toilet is made so you can thank your loo manufacturer for this little wonder.
