10 Science Myths Debunked

8. We Only Use 10% Of Our Brains

Some puzzled viewers might argue that the collaborators behind the film €˜Lucy€™ probably did only use 10% of their brains when producing the blockbuster. But the idea perpetuated in this film, and many other media outlets, that the average human only uses 10% of their brain in general, is a myth. The origins of this urban legend aren€™t clear, but suggestions hail back to the likes of Albert Einstein, who apparently used a similar notion to explain his own incredible intellect. The idea stuck, allowing people to feel that they were not limited by their current capabilities, and that 90% more intelligence was sitting there, ready and waiting to be unlocked. The truth is that at times, we may only be utilising 10% of our brains €“ when performing a task no more taxing than resting and thinking. However, brain scans have shown that all of the brain is active most of the time, with some areas more active at any given moment. "Let's put it this way: the brain represents three percent of the body's weight and uses 20 percent of the body's energy." Explains neurologist Barry Gordon from John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. We still haven€™t revealed all of the mysteries of the human brain, but the idea that we can activate super powers and supernatural intelligence resides in myth, not science. If you want to unlock more of your potential, we€™d suggest reading a few good books instead.
