The fearsome, twisting body sildes of Kala & Tai Nui are not for the faint hearted. These winding, steep slides drop you right through the heart of the volcano. You might be might be so desperate to ride these thrilling attractions that you might not stop to think just what the names of these slides refer to, but there's a whole story surrounding Kala & Tai Nui.

Dale Mason told us that prior to the Waturi's arrival, there lived on the island a God named Krakatau and his daughter Tai Nui.

Tai Nui fell in love with an island native named Kala, a man who she knew her father would not approve of. When Krakatau found out about the lovers he cast Kala into the sky where he became the moon. The loss of her love caused Tai Nui to cry so much that her tears formed the sea.

Dale promised that there was a happy ending for the pair;

Krakatau was sitting on the beach one day, proud as punch at what he had done. The tears of the sea, the tears of his daughter washed up around his legs. He realised the error of the choice he had made. So he reached into the ground and he grabbed the earth and he pulled it to the sky, connecting sea and sky, connecting Kala and Tai Nui... They live in the moon, and they fall to the sea every night.

So the serpentine body slides represent the pairs nightly fall down the Volcano into the sea. Aww, how romantic?!
