Chartreuse

Chartreuse is French liquor that was invented back in 1737, by a group of Carthusian monks who decided the best way to praise God was to blend herbs, plants and flowers together to make a potent alcoholic concoction.

The recipe was handed down to them by François Annibal d’Estrées in 1605, detailed in a manuscript that also included distillation instructions.

The monks prevented the drink from being exported abroad for years, and during the French Revolution, the secret recipe was protected from the authorities. When a mudslide destroyed their distillery in the Chartreuse Mountains in the 1930s, the government ordered army engineers to rebuild it at a location near Voiro.

That's where Chartreuse is mixed to this day, and just two monks know everything that goes into its herbal mixture.
