Men and women are going through a difficult time in this day and age in judging what's acceptable and what's not in terms of etiquette. A man doesn't want to offend a woman by offering to buy her dinner but as a man, they still feel a sense of responsibility that comes with their chivalrous nature by picking up the bill. Although you don't mind splitting or even treating him, you still expect him to offer to pay on the first date. If the bill arrives and he looks at you, expecting you to pay then that isn't great. No one should ever expect to have things bought for them whether you're in a relationship or not and if it's the first time that you're out and he doesn't offer, then he's probably sponging from you. At least if he offers, you know that he's up for treating you, and everyone deserves a treat, especially on a first date.
