10 Skills To Help You Survive The Apocalypse

8. After Impact: Meteor

If the initial impact was by a meteor and not a nuclear weapon then you won't have to worry about radioactive fallout, but it is likely to be many times more powerful and plunge the Earth into a cold, dark winter as the dust cloud blocks out the sun.

In the first month it would be better to stay inside and, if you do have to venture out for firewood and supplies, wear a damp cloth over your nose and mouth to prevent yourself breathing in the ash.

As global temperatures begin to plummet, the best place to be is by the coast as the oceans retain heat far better than land and air. After about 6 months, the sun should start to come out again, but it will still be cold due to the sun-reflecting sulphur compounds in the atmosphere.

The environmental effects of an asteroid impact will begin to return to normal after around 4 years (provided that the Earth hasn't been knocked off its axis as this will alter the seasons). The main challenges you will face here will be with the loss of civilisation and technology and the dangers posed by other desperate survivors.
