Mystery: Fossils of the Helicoprion are among the strangest ever discovered. The shark-like fish had left behind their fossilised jaws, which made up a bizarre spiral of teeth. This baffled scientists, who were unsure of the purpose of this spiral, or where it was actually located. Explanation: In recent years, scientists were able to solve the mystery of the tooth spirals, thanks to X-Ray CT scanner images of the Helicoprion fossils. The scans were used to create a 3-D model of the skull, from which the surmised that the spiral was actually positioned internally. The purpose of the spiral appeared to have been some sort of 'tooth factory,' giving the Helicoprion a steady supply of razor-sharp teeth.
