10 Solved Mysteries With Incredible Explanations

3. The Bloop

Mystery: The Bloop was an extremely powerful underwater sound, detected by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in 1997. The story of the mysterious 'Bloop' has spread around popular culture over the years, with many attributing it to monstrously large underwater creatures, or even H.P. Lovecraft's 'Cthulhu'. Explanation: It was Dr. Christopher Fox of the NOAA that introduced the idea that the Bloop could have been animal in origin, claiming that the sound's "signature is a rapid variation in frequency similar to that of sounds known to be made by marine beasts." However, since then the NOAA have attributed the Bloop to the sounds of a huge icequake. Similar examples have been heard since, with almost matching spectrograms, and the area of origin (speculated to be between the Ross Sea and Bransfield Straits) is known for these icequakes.
