1408 was another story - this time a short story - with an unlikely origin: it began as an exercise on writing, in King's astutely named memoir of the craft, On Writing. The tale of a haunted hotel room, the little snippet he included in On Writing inspired readers to ask for more - they wanted to know what exactly went down in room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York.

Eventually the story became part of a fantastic collection, Everything's Eventual, and a major motion picture starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.

While the film was open ended, the story wasn't to the same extent, but it's not a sequel to either fans are looking for. Rather, what's ripe for expansion is the other stories of 1408: what happened in that room prior to the arrival of author Mike Enslin. Some of that is glimpsed through visions the room itself creates, but seeing things through the eyes of past occupants - now that would be interesting!
