Cures for cancer include: lathering your skin with honey, incinerating a dog's skull and then rubbing the ashes on your face. There are many unorthodox practises that are active today and whilst most people swear by it, they aren't recommended by your GP and people will probably think that you're a bit weird. However, before the days of professional doctors, there were so called witch doctors (spiritual doctors) and they believed in healing the spirit which would heal the body. People sought any kind of healing power that they could in order to get better and as the majority of society were peasants, it had to be cheap. In the late 19th Century people believed that if you held a church door key then it would heal your skin if you were ever bitten by a dog and that touching the rope of a hanged man would would cure fits. Toothache could be prevented by wearing a dead mole around your neck and the only way to eradicate tooth pain (if the dead mole strangely didn't work) then you could hammer a nail into the tooth until you started to bleed, remove the nail and then drive it into a tree to transfer the pain. WhatCulture does not endorse these methods of relieving toothache or any other illnesses that you may have.
