10 Struggles Of A Brit Living In America

9. Everything Is So Far Away In America

It takes around 14 hours to drive from Land's End to John O'Groats, so from the very tip-top of the United Kingdom to the very bottom takes little over half a day. Coast to coast in America takes around 41 hours, and that's basically terrifying. The sheer magnitude of the place can be truly overwhelming at times. To put it into perspective, Britain is around the size of Louisiana and minuscule in comparison to Texas. America is BIG. You cannot just dash to the corner shop for milk if you run out; you will likely need to drive to the 'local' shop 15 minutes away. Americans think nothing of a 12 hour drive to Florida or a 'quick' 5 hour drive to Tennessee. Americans seem to adhere to the mantra that bigger is better. The cars are bigger, sky scrapers are taller and food portions are enormous. Then there are the roads, and they are simply huge. The historic Route 6 is a world famous "road trip" favourite. It is 2448 miles long; it crosses 8 states and 3 time zones. Nothing in Britain comes close, there are no websites dedicated to taking a trip up or down the M6. The concept of "far" is very different here, so it's no wonder there's a booming market for RVs in the US, and not across the pond. After all, when you can to Scotland and back to your house in under a day, what's the point in bringing the whole damn house with you?
