10 Struggles Of A Brit Living In America

7. No Sunday Roasts

Is there anything much more British than a Sunday Roast? Roasted meat, crispy roasted potatoes, vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Heaven on a plate. This British staple is basically unheard of in America. A "roast" here, is a large hunk of boneless beef cooked with vegetables like carrots, onion, celery and potatoes in a beef broth. This is most often done in a slow cooker. Whilst delicious, this version of a roast cannot hold a candle to the British version. The wide selection of meats and vegetables available for a British roast lashed with gravy make it something very special, and the Americans have yet to bottle that lightning. American supermarkets technically sell all of the ingredients needed to make this wonderful meal. However the fact of the matter is that it is impossible to purchase King Edward or Mauris Piper potatoes, quick-and-easy Aunt Bessie Yorkshire puddings and Bisto/Oxo granules. This means that reproducing an authentic Sunday roast is almost impossible for a Brit in America. The sad fact is that there are no local pubs or carveries that will produce a great roast for you, just serves as another blow. You can find steaks as big as your head and burgers so tall they need a skewer to keep them upright, but as hard as you search, locating a great Sunday Roast in America is not going to happen.
