This issue finds its most searing debate in America, but there is still a rather loud dialogue on this side of the Atlantic as to whether women should be given the choice to abort unwanted or unsafe pregnancies. It is one of the oldest and most significant ethical questions facing our society, with groups on either side of the discussion keen to protest and argue their case. At the core of the debate is the question of humanity. Pro-life campaigners believe that life starts at conception, meaning that abortion amounts to an act of murder. Alternatively, those who subscribe to pro-choice ideas have a variety of ideas as to when life begins, but broadly support the idea for a woman to make the choice to abort a foetus early on in the pregnancy. It's a hugely emotionally-charged issue that brings out passion in a lot of people. That is what makes it a hugely volatile topic.
