10 Terrifying Vampire Stories For Halloween
9. The Berwick Upon Tweed Vampire
The next story on our list was first recorded by William Of Newbury, an english historian who was interested in the occult and wrote many accounts of Vampire attacks during the 12th Century.
The story tells of an old man living in Berwick Upon Tweed who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for riches. After he died, the townsfolk reported that the man would rise from his grave at night and roam the streets. As if this was not scary enough, eye witnesses told William Of Newbury that the man was accompanied on his nightly walks by a vicious pack of hell hounds. The hounds would bark loudly and drove fear into the hearts of anyone who heard them.
This spectacle continued for several days and the people of Berwick Upon Tweed became too scared to leave their homes after dark. The townspeople called a meeting to decide on a course of action for dealing with the demon haunting their town.
The meeting resulted in ten of the town's bravest young men being elected to slay the creature. The men went to the graveyard where the monster was buried and dug up his body. They set fire to the body as they had been advised that this was the only way to destroy the vampire.
No sign of the hell hounds were found in the vampires tomb and they were never seen again in Berwick. However, similar sightings of hell hounds have been reported all over England including a beast named Black Shuck who is said to roam the countryside of East Anglia.
