10 Terrifying Vampire Stories For Halloween

5. Jure Grando

The next vampire on our list was known during his life as Jure Grando, he lived in Croatia until his death in 1656. The legend goes that Grando would rise from his grave at night and terrorise people in the local town, including his wife.

Grando would also knock loudly on the doors of people€™s houses. These knocks came to be a terrible omen as one of the residents of the house would die of a mysterious and sudden illness within days of hearing the knocks.

This went on for 16 years until a local priest named Father Giorgio decided that enough was enough. Father Giorgio tracked the vampire down and held a crucifix to it while commanding that it leave the townspeople alone in the name of Jesus Christ. It is reported that this did nothing but make the vampire weep.

Following Father Giorgio€™s failed attempt to free the town from the grasps of Vampire Grando, there was another wave of attempts to slay Grando, all of which also failed. Finally, a group of men led by Father Giorgio set out and discovered Grando€™s tomb and set about digging him up.

They found his body in a state of suspended animation, perfectly preserved and with a perverse smile upon its face. The group once again attempted to slay the vampire but failed when the stake would not penetrate its skin. Father Giorgio then performed an exorcism on the vampire which allowed the group to finally slay it by cutting off its head. A man who witnessed the exorcism of Grando reported that the vampire let out a blood curdling scream. Following the exorcism, Grando€™s reign of terror was over.
