10 Terrifying Vampire Stories For Halloween
3. The Story Of Petar Plogojowitz
The case of Petar Plogojowitz is an interesting one due to the large amount of official documents about it. Plogojowitz was an Austrian peasant who died in 1725.
Following his death people began to claim that they were being attacked and strangled by Plogojowitz while they tried to sleep at night. Each of his victims would then fall ill and die within 24 hours of the alleged attacks. He is also reported to have paid his son a visit to demand food, his son refused him and Plogojowitz subsequently killed him.
After about 8 days and 9 deaths, the villagers decided that action must be taken and dug up the body of Plogojowitz. They found that his body closely matched the symptoms of a vampire and called upon the Austiran officials to act.
Imperial Provisor Frombald was sent to the region to oversee the slaying of the vampire. Once Frombald arrived, the townspeople led him to the vampire's grave where they drove a stake through its heart and set fire to its body. Frombald recorded what he had witnessed in an official government report.
